Daily Life, Tech Crunch

Asus recently launched three smartphones under the Zenfone 4 series – the Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie (ZB553KL) (First look), Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie (Dual Camera Version) (ZD553KL), and Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro (ZD552KL) (First Impressions).

The greater variant of the three- Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is retailing for Rs. 23,999 in the Indian market. And the USP of the smartphone, as the name itself suggests, is the 24MP front-facing camera, which also offers a Portrait mode for bokeh shots.

The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro also has decent specifications on paper, in-comparison with smartphones such as Oneplus 3, Vivo V7+, etc. I have been using the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro as my primary device for the last ten days and here’s my complete review of the smartphone.

Design And Display:

The Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is a well built device. It is encased in a metal unibody and the rear surface of the phone has a matte finish. Chamfering is seen on edges on both the front and the back, which adds a glossy chrome layer to the design. Two horizontal antenna lines are prominently seen on the rear side at the top and bottom.

While the camera section occupies the top half, the centre portion sees the Asus branding. It is quite slim at 7 mm thickness and weighs around 145 grams. There is minor camera bump. It feels good in the hand and the rounded edges make sure the grip is good on the otherwise slippery device.

Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro comes with a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display. It is protected by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass which ensures the display surface is smudge proof. The quality of the display is really good. Brightness levels are optimal, text and app icons are sharp and thanks to the AMOLED panel, the contrast is really good. Gaming was a pleasure on the sharp display as well.

Hardware And Software:

The ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is decently equipped for a smartphone in this price range. It rocks a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. This is a tried and tested processor, and unsurprisingly, general performance is good. Benchmark numbers are also pretty decent. We got 65,222 points in AnTuTu and 22fps in GFXbench. Other specifications include single-band Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GLONASS, and USB-OTG. It’s still missing features like a 5GHZ Wi-Fi band and NFC. 4G works and VoLTE is also supported.

The Selfie Pro 4 also sees a shift to ZenUI 4.0, which is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Compared to its earlier iteration, ZenUI 4.0 is leaner and has a few design improvements. The functionality and customisation options are still pretty much the same though, so a long-press on the home screen brings up options to change the theme and set other options; swiping right gets you to Google Now; and a long-press of the home button summons Google Assistant. There’s an app drawer too. FM radio is present but is only accessible via the notification shade. Nougat’s split-screen mode is supported, and lets you use two apps at the same time.

ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro has the world’s most advanced front camera system featuring the Sony® IMX362 dual pixel image sensor that has twice the number of light-capturing photodiodes as conventional sensors of the same resolution. 24MP* DuoPixel™ camera technology uses the information captured by the sensor to intelligently create one 24MP photo, resulting in beautiful, high-resolution selfies.

Portrait Selfie

Add a new dimension to your selfie photography with ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro’s front-facing 120-degree widest-angle camera. Its wide angle allows you to capture photos and videos that fit more of your environment into the frame, so you can include a scenic background in your shot or gather your friends together and have fun taking wefies.

In addition to its dual selfie cameras, ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro features a rear 16MP camera with a Sony IMX351 image sensor and ASUS SuperPixel™ Engine to let you capture every precious moment with stunning detail. Ultrafast 0.03 seconds phase detection auto-focus helps you get the shot you want, every time. True 4K UHD video recording and electronic image stabilization (EIS) lets you shoot crisp, blur-free videos that captivate your audience.

Battery Life:

The Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro has a 3,000 mAh battery in that slim body. And, we have to say, it’s a marathon-runner for sure. Even after testing it with games and taking it out for a photo shoot, the battery still had enough charge to take us through a whole day. ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro offers fast charging that supplies 10W (5V/2A) of power to its 3000mAh battery. With its power-efficient CPU, you can do more online surfing, stream longer videos, play games and talk as much as you want without worrying about the battery.

The Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is certainly not a bad phone. The hardware is just right for an upper-midrange device, its user interface is smooth and its customizations are actually fun to play around with. Its thin profile and metal build make it look and feel like a premium handset. Yet it still holds a rather large battery and definitely lasts a while. Its display is a pleasure to look at and can be set to taste, whether you love super-punchy colors or soft and subdued ones.
