Golmaal in Goa – Book Review

Ratings: 4-5 stars.

The name Chris Brown spells ‘golmaal’ or deception! Who is Chris Brown really? Is he really there to just shoot a documentary film on the drug mafia in Goa as he claims? Why is the Goa Don Shantaram ‘Shaitan’ Prabhu, himself a drug kingpin, supporting him? If Chris is making a drug documentary, wouldn’t that expose the Don’s own drug empire?

Inspector Simon Gomes of the Calangute Police station has been tailing Chris from the moment he enters Goa to find answers to these questions. And Chris’ Goa operation seems to have serious international ramifications. For the CIA, too, is on his trail. There appears to be British Intelligence surveillance as well.

Golmaal in Goa by Oswald Pereira has been a light, fun read. It’s a humorous story, but also some mystery attached to it.

I loved the way the author has written the book, the story just flows and you’ll find yourself turning the pages quickly.

It has the tartness of Goa’s sorpotel and the fiery smite of vindaloo. Some of those graphic Konkani cusswords, best delivered in an inbred Goan accent are sure to crack you up.
The climax is something you wouldn’t see coming. Simon Gomes and his small team of Calangute cops who end up covering themselves with glory. You’ll be rooting for Gomes as he gets to the finish line first. I enjoyed “Golmaal…” as a work of fiction that has been crafted with the story-telling confidence that comes from the practised pen of an author who has earlier given us other memorable entertainers in print.

I personally loved the character of the police inspector Simon Gomes. However, the other characters are portrayed equally well, especially Chris Brown. I stayed up way past my bedtime just to know what will be happening next.

The climax is something you wouldn’t see coming. But I think it does justice to the plot.

Golmaal in Goa is Oswald Pereira’s fifth work of fiction and it’s as amazing as the previous books.

If you’re looking for a light, action packed and fun read, I would definitely recommend Golmaal in Goa.
